Amazon Company Review
Amazon.com: High turnover among generic suppliers erodes consumer confidence, drives down price, and delivers lesser-quality mattresses.
What We Love:
- Incredibly low cost
- Easy check-out system
Amazon.com Cons:
- Individuals may sell goods under guise of a generic brand name, reducing seller credibility
- No customer service department
- Overall low quality of memory foam mattresses from which to choose
Amazon.com is a convenient and secure selling platform for both individuals and professional resellers. The difference between the two seems arbitrary: Amazon.com classifies professional resellers as individuals who “expect to sell more than 40 items a month.” This opens the door for a number of under qualified or otherwise unknowledgeable individuals to distribute items under the guise of a generic brand name. Consumers may take comfort in the community’s effort to implement quality control, however, as sellers are publicly reviewed and rated by their customers. This adds a level of transparency that can boost consumer confidence. In categories with few resellers, however, reviews and ratings may be scarce, leaving the consumer at the mercy of the honesty and salesmanship of faceless resellers.
With 25 unique categories ranging from books to electronics, Amazon.com is a melting pot of different goods. Items are classified by the seller as new or used, with the condition of all used items being disclosed as like new, good, average, and so on. When it comes to memory foam mattresses, however, a lack of manufacturer and retailer presence leaves consumers most often purchasing second-hand mattresses from one another. This introduces the primary downfall of shopping for memory foam on Amazon.com: the quality of the goods received depends largely on the degree of care its previous owner provided.
The mattresses changing hands on Amazon.com are most often low in quality. The average memory foam density is undisclosed, most likely because resellers are unaware of the mattress construction and specifications. The anonymity that goes hand-in-hand with selling on Amazon.com sets the table for resellers who import low quality mattresses, usually from China or Southeast Asia. Buyer Beware: Asian made mattresses are notorious for containing filler agents like clay. These filler agents are added to memory foam to increase its weight, thus simulating the weight of a dense and high quality product. Memory foam with clay-filler loses its ability to contour to the curvature of the human body over time, inflicting pressure that may lead to mild to severe pain and stiffness.
