Serta Company Review

Serta

Serta®, longstanding manufacturer of The World’s Best Mattress™.

What We Love:

  • Founded in 1931, Serta is the oldest innerspring mattress producer in the industry
  • High quality American made product
  • 10” Serta models offer good competitive value compared to other leading manufacturers

Serta® Cons:

  • Serta may be the manufacturer of The World’s Best Mattress™, but their experience lies primarily with innerspring mattresses
  • Serta’s experience with memory foam dates back to only 2004
  • Memory foam support layer is compromised by the quilted mattress-top of high end Serta mattresses
  • Customers may find themselves paying extra for the Serta brand name

Serta was founded when 13 independent innerspring mattress manufacturers formed a licensing agreement in 1931.  The Serta brand is now the cooperative property of 8 independent licensees, the largest of which is National Bedding Company.  Since 2004, the National Bedding Company has shifted to become manager of Serta International.

The Serta brand’s flagship mattress is undoubtedly the Perfect Sleeper®, and it demonstrates the power of the Serta brand to deliver high quality mattresses on both a local and international level.  With many years of widespread sales, Serta is a company with significant amounts of equity and knowledge.  In the 75 years since its founding, Serta has made continual investments in research and development that ensure only the newest and best technologies are incorporated into their mattresses.

When it comes to memory foam, however, Serta’s longstanding history may be its downfall.  As a mattress manufacturer that began in the 1930s, much of Serta’s knowledge and investment lies in the construction of innerspring mattresses.  Memory foam technologies were implemented in the 1990s, but only in a limited capacity.  The Comfort Quilt® was the first of their mattresses to incorporate memory foam, modestly weaving temperature-sensitive foam fibers into the quilted topper of their innerspring mattress design.  This integration is superficial, at best; depriving customers of the comprehensive sleep advantages offered by mattresses made of entirely memory foam.  A full-on memory foam mattress line was not introduced until 2004, equating Serta’s experience with all-foam mattresses with specialty manufactures like Select Foam™ , Memoryfoam.com®, and Tempurpedic®.

Nevertheless, Serta manufactures memory foam mattresses using high quality 4 and 5lb densities.  The higher-than-average price for this brand reflects the company’s rich history as an innerspring mattress manufacturer and not necessarily for their innovative use of memory foam.
